Why Connect Your Marketplaces?
Most states have marketplace facilitator laws, which shift the responsibility for collecting and remitting sales tax on marketplace sales to the marketplace itself (Amazon, eBay, Walmart, etc.). Because of this, sellers often assume marketplace sales don’t affect their Numeral setup — but that isn’t the case:- You may still have a filing or reporting obligation. Even when a marketplace collects and remits tax on your behalf, many states still require you to include those sales on your own return, either as reported (exempt) sales or through a separate informational filing.
- Marketplace sales still count toward your economic nexus thresholds. In most states, revenue and transaction counts from marketplace sales are combined with your direct sales when determining whether you’ve crossed a state’s economic nexus threshold — even though the marketplace is the one collecting tax. Crossing a threshold can create a registration and filing obligation for your direct sales channels, even if you never have to collect tax on the marketplace sales themselves.
- Complete nexus monitoring requires complete sales data. Without visibility into your marketplace transactions, Numeral can’t accurately track when you’ve crossed a threshold in a new state, which can lead to missed registrations and filings.
